Scar Relief

Treatment for scars Worcestershire & Buckinghamshire

Scar therapy is a specialised treatment to promote improvement and stimulate change in the body where surgery has caused adhesions, fibrosis or thickened scar tissue, even years after the damage occurred.

It is ideal for anyone in discomfort or unhappy with how they feel after surgery or severe burns. From keyhole surgeries to knee replacement, cancer surgeries to c-section or accidents requiring the insertion of metalwork, people can be left with discomfort, pain, tightness, reduced mobility or damage to the nerves. Scar therapy can help all these problems.

    About me…

My interest in treating scars has developed from several strands of my working life.
I started out as a diagnostic radiographer, training in Oxford and going on to work at various major hospitals in the NHS as well as private practice in Harley St. I had a special interest in orthopaedics and trauma and worked alongside surgeons in theatre as well as in the main x-ray departments.
In 2003 I retrained as a Bowen therapist, having noticed that the patients that I was x-raying often had pain in areas that were distant from where their problem lay. My work as a radiographer did not allow me to pursue this line of thinking so I changed career to explore this further. I kept my contacts within the health service and remain firmly convinced that conventional and complementary therapies each have their place.
In recent years it has become increasingly apparent that scars anywhere on a patient’s body can create a reduction in functional movement, not only in the affected area but elsewhere. The effect of a scar can be far reaching, for instance an abdominal scar can be a contributory factor in back pain.
The techniques that I use have been developed with the experience of great teachers, and informed by lot of research coming from China, USA and Japan in particular.

What I can do for you…

    Your particular scar

Scars not only look different from person to person but can also feel different from person to person. They can have decreased sensitivity to the point where there is numbness or they can be so sensitive to touch that even clothing is unbearable over the affected area. They can be itchy and red. Some can look good on the surface yet restrict normal movement underneath. Some people have an emotional response related to the cause of the scar and some patients have found the scar treatment helps even this.

All these are versions of normal, and all of them can be addressed gently with scar treatment. It uses the lightest of touch, always within the comfort zone of the patient, often starting some distance away from the scar site and working towards it slowly. Talking and communicating what is going on during treatment is important and time is taken to achieve this.

    How can it help?

The aim is to improve function, range of movement and sensation, by encouraging normal movement between the layers of tissue. Visually cosmetic changes can also take place: scars appearing flatter, lighter and less prominent. Tightness in the surrounding tissues can be reduced and holes and ridges can be minimised, but the emphasis is on restoring movement and function.

Changes that occur within the scar during treatment are usually permanent. Often one or two sessions may be all that is required but it depends on the type of scar and size of the area of affected tissue. Over several treatments the layers of tissue, or fascia, become gradually unstuck and start to slide over each other to restore normal movement and nerve connections.
